Being
able to rent a car means you can
venture onto the more inaccessible
roads and routes available in Madeira.
It
is recommended that you take a few
days to travel around Madeira. This
way you can see more, drive more
safely and have more rest. Some
of the roads can be challenging
driving. But many offer a value
to your holiday you could not get
when travelling by foot, bus, taxi
or organised tours.
Madeira
has a mountainous terrain and is
terraced along all the roads with
many small plots of land full of
vegetables, grapes, and mostly flowers
and green plant life. Expect to
reach your destinations later than
you planned because of all the sights,
and sometimes the conditions of
the road, which force you to sometimes
even drive at 20 Km/h.
It
is always a good idea to pack something
in to eat or drink in the car for
your journey. However, there are
many side shops for a quick snack
at different places across Madeira.
Moreover, as you will be ascending
and descending various altitudes
we also recommend that you pack
in a sweater or jersey for the high
mountain routes, and a swimsuit
for the beach side routes: most
beaches are public and only a few
spots are privately owned - so stopping
over near the beach anywhere in
Madeira is quite all right.
